self care

Why self-care and selfish should go together.

malama.jpg

Let’s remove the guilt

and start embracing the importance of self-care. And “yes” putting everything on pause can sound selfish. But what’s wrong with that?

It’s not like I’m suggesting that you let children go hungry, ignore the home, forget to return important calls or leave a burning pot on the stove.

You need this!

With all the stress and ugly in the world you need time and a place to refresh.

Blessed is she who knows her worth and is esteemed, WOMAN is her kind.
— Hoomalamalama

Think about the check engine light on your dashboard and imagine that you’re too busy to fix it, leaving the task for tomorrow. Eventually tomorrow becomes a week, then a month. Without warning, while you’re driving to an important event, the engine starts smoking and it stalls. Right in the middle of a four way traffic sign

Your initial attitude is frustration, anger and blame but it warned you. Is that really fair?

Intentional Self-Care

Intentional self-care is making time for your self and not letting anything get in your way. If an emergency should occur, take care of it then return to your plan. (As soon as it’s possible.)

Don’t expect people around you to understand. Why? Because most humans care about things that involve them and your self-care routine doesn’t and it shouldn’t include anyone but you.

You’re not meant to share this moment with anyone and you need to be selfish. This is a sacred time set aside to nourish and protect your greatest investment… your body. (Mind and soul included.)

Plan it, Do it, Done

We can talk all day about what we want to do but doing is so much better. The previous blogpost I wrote about keeping your promises. I was referring to the promise you make to yourself. If you plan to do something, do it!

Below is a few pages from my 2021 planner spread and my theme was terrarium. It represents an ideal environment where I am the creator of its anatomy.

Mālama Kou Kino

If you take care of your body it will take care of you. It really is that simple.

Mother Nature's Beauty Secret

1clay.png

One of my favorite things as a child was playing in the mud. My siblings and I would search for the perfect mud puddle or creek with a clay embankment. It was messy and heaven at the same time.  Forget play-dough, our clay was 100% organic without any harmful dyes.

“100% Organic”

Today I'm grown, slightly mature and a mother but I still enjoy that cool mushy feeling of wet clay. Naturally I would like to indulge in a facial mask but the prices at many of these high-end spas are interesting. After all I use to play in this stuff for free!

Beauty is a diverse force made up of birth, imagination and self-care.
— Ho'omalamalama

I actually checked out a spa and many of the items in their mask are in my kitchen. Products like honey, oats and vitamin E. (I have a supplement shelf.) All I needed was the clay to make my mud mask. Fortunately I know of an organic shop called Ubiquitous Journey that sells herbs, loose leaf teas, spices and a beauty DIY section. (Do It Yourself.)

I chose three different types of clays, each with unique mineral content and played around with various combinations. It's so easy to use that I brought some to the ladies in my Zumba class. The picture above was taken after my Facebook lifestream session where I showed them how to mix and apply  the clays.

3clay.jpg

There are countless blogs, vlogs and articles about these amazing clays. My purpose is to show you a few of the combinations that you can duplicate.

The main ingredient is the clay and you can start using it with little prep time. All you really need is purified, filtered or distilled water to mix and make your mud mask.

As you can see from the picture below my na keiki (children) wanted in on the fun too!

TIP #1 - This is a fun way to explore self care for growing preteen and teenagers.

BASIC MIX

  1. One tablespoon clay (a little can go a long way)

  2. Purified H2O (add slowly for a pasty texture)

  3. Few drops of almond oil (indulge in the nourishing feeling)

  4. Mix and use (I prefer to make it when I need it)

  5. Leave on for about 5 - 8 minutes

TIP #2 - Create a Pinterest Board with recipes to try. You can check out mine here.

In classic kiddie fashion they had to make faces to go with their mask. I'm super happy for my young teens who can benefit from the clays at an early age. Preventing that horrible teen acne problem that I remember going through. The best part is that it has ZERO chemical content and totally organic.

Mini breakdown...

  • Rhassoul Clay - suitable for daily use.

  • French Green Clay (and others) - about once a week or on targeted areas.

  • Fullers Earth Clay - about once a week.

TIP #3 - Try it!

It’s not enough to read this post, you must try it.

Pull out your trusty planner and schedule each step. I’ll help!

  1. Choose a clay.

  2. Shop at your local organic store or online.

  3. Pick a self-care day and stick to it.

  4. Create the environment, like candles and music.

  5. Do it and journal about the experience.

Want to learn more about beauty?

In 2017 I wrote an eBook that explores Beauty in a multi-dimensional way. Imagine a diamond with many sides and angles. That is Beauty… one part of many experiences.

Have you ever heard of the “5 Realms Of Beauty?”

To explain Beauty’s diversity I thought of a web with five anchoring points. Each one representing a piece of wisdom, a secret revealed through the eBook.

What is this eBook called and how will I benefit?

For those of you who are hearing about this for the first time it’s called, “Walk In Beauty, Unlock it’s secrets & uncover your potential.” The benefit is that each eBook sold come’s with an eClass and PDF sheets that you can use. It’s basically an eBook + Tutorial = Walk In Beauty.

5 Benefits of bulk buying 'Organic' beauty products

obp.jpg

Things generally cost more when you have to piece them out into smaller containers. And there's one industry that benefits from repackaging, you've probably guessed it... our very own BEAUTY industry.

I was introduced to bulk buying organic beauty ingredients from a friend. Her shop was a haven for my imagination and after almost 10 years she closed her doors, but she sparked an interest.

I've been playing with mud since I was a child. And who knew that I would be working with it as an adult.

MY GOAL is to inspire you to bulk buy your organic ingredients and make your own. It's fun and sustainable.

Beauty is what we discover when we turn off the worlds expectations and listen to ourselves.

1. Less trash when you bulk buy.

I buy my clays in 1lb bags and create smaller (reusable) containers. Rhassoul Clay - high in minerals, great for the entire body with a luxe feeling. Bentonite Clay - is known to absorb toxins from the skin. French Green Clay - it purifies the pores and greatly improves the health of the skin, face & more.

2. Better price for a higher quality.

Quality matters in the world of beauty products. Where the product was sourced and how it was created makes a huge difference. Remember that old saying, "You get what you pay for." Buying in bulk allows you to save in the end.

Sweet Almond Oil - rich in Vitamin E and ah-mazing for the skin. Grapeseed Oil - Keeps your skin looking young, and who doesn't what that.

3. You can create many combinations.

Variety is key, it adds a little pizzaz into your beauty rituals. And we could all use some self-care inspiration in our lives.

"I want a boring beauty routine" said NO one.

Both contain epsom, Himalayan and Dead Sea salt. Except one is infused with rose petals.

4. Many uses from one large product.

For example: This large Himalayan salt rock can be ground down to season food. You could also add it to your bath water or foot soak. The larger rock will take time to dissolve so you can enjoy it over time.

More of it's uses and benefits click here.

5. Makes gift giving so much easier.

I enjoy blessing my Ohana, family, with gifts that promote their self-care routine and enhance their natural beauty. Buying in bulk is the perfect companion for someone who loves giving signature gifts.

Incense will enhance your entire beauty ritual. It gives you a sense of the sacredness regarding your self-care. You can purchase a bunch of incense sticks and wrap a few to give away. I prefer Shoyeido because I'm sensitive to smells. This brand isn't smoky or dusty, it's actually the best.

The art of self-care.

IMG_5742.JPG

I've been a self-care fanatic since I was young. Which was unusual for an 80's pre-teen or tween. I wrote about it before but basically I had a bad reaction to deodorants, which burned my skin, and there began my organic beauty journey, in a nut-shell.

It wasn't until I gave birth that my self-care regiment became obsolete. I was lucky to get sleep, and long showers were a thing of the past. I fell off the wagon and hit the ground hard. Eventually I started to regain my rituals. Which started with me spending on quality products.

The idea is to invest into your self-care, which your mind will internalize value. I'm not talking about shoes or purses but soaps, lotions and products that go onto your skin. Allow your skin to feel luxury.

The art of self-care is realizing that your body is the canvas, your mind wields the tools and your Soul will reap its benefits. Become SOUL BEAUTIFUL.
— Ho'omalamalama

Is it expensive?

Not if you make your own. You can purchase basic ingredients that will last longer if you mix what you need. I love a good face mask but I can't handle the preservatives that goes into the store bought mixes. So I mix my own when I need to. Click here to see what I use.

Below are a few pointers, five to be exact, that address how you can adopt you're very own self-care ritual. Recognizing your body as a fresh canvas, full of life.

The bottom line is that you have to invest time into reading, understanding and creating (or purchasing) items that promote the longevity of your beauty. Remember that we are on a journey to Walk In Beauty.

Take back some time in your week to complete the ritual of your own self-care. Make it a priority! From one busy female to another, no one else will take care of you, unless you do first. Value yourself to make or keep a self-care, toxic-free, lifestyle.
